Tesla Model Y

The cabin layout of the Tesla Model Y mimics that of the Model 3 on which it is based, which makes the interior look clean and minimalist. Having a dual-tone black and grey upholstery theme, the Model Y has a wraparound design for its dashboard, while having a three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel with minimalist-looking controls and a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre console.

This massive screen is the star highlight of the entire cabin, for it single-handedly serves as the instrument console, climate control interface, and additional fancy features like Camp mode and Dog mode, besides also having a host of infotainment features. The Model Y also gets an additional 8-inch touchscreen behind the centre console between the front seats, through which one can control the audio and climate control settings from the rear seats. The other attention-grabbing features of the Model Y are a 17-speaker audio system, panoramic glass roof, wireless charging, powered and ventilated front seats, and ambient lighting. 

Based on the Model 3, the Tesla Model Y has a slightly more heightened stance, which gives it the proportions of a crossover. The sloping coupe-like roofline towards the rear adds some visual drama to the otherwise clean and minimalist design of the Model Y. 

The front bonnet of the Tesla Model Y has a curved look with smooth contours that flow towards the blanked-out fascia at the bottom. The Model Y has sweptback curved all-LED headlamps, that look attractive with their innovative lighting patterns. 

The side profile of the Tesla Model Y continues the curvy and aerodynamic essence, with the Base and Long Range AWD having 19-inch or 20-inch wheels and the Performance variant having 21-inch aero wheels. While the front and rear fenders have curved contours over them, the door panels here have flush-type handles. At the back, the Model Y’s sloping roofline ends up at the stubby boot, with the rear profile having combination LED tail lamps with wraparound LED inserts. 

Based on the Model 3, the Tesla Model Y also has the suspension setup of the former, comprising of independent, double wishbone suspension with a coil spring, telescopic damper and a sway bar at the front and independent, multi-link suspension with a coil spring and telescopic damper at the rear. Like the Model 3, the Tesla Model Y also has a softer ride quality and a lighter steering setup, which could have been more responsive at higher speeds. 

There are different motor and battery setups for all three variants of the Tesla Model Y. The Base version of the Model Y has a rear-mounted motor, which generates 295 bhp and 430 Nm while enabling the Model Y to attain a top speed of 217 kmph. Its 60kWh battery delivers a maximum range of 430 km. 

The Long Range AWD variant of the Tesla Model Y has a dual-motor setup, which claims combined power and torque outputs of 434 bhp and 510 Nm respectively while giving it a top speed of 217 kmph. It has an 82kWh battery that returns 565 km of range. Lastly, the Performance version also has a dual-motor setup, which churns out 503 bhp and 670 Nm and claims a top speed of 250 kmph. This version also gets an 82kWh battery with a maximum claimed range of 514 km (all ranges are WLTP-certified). 

The revolutionary Autopilot driving assistant is the star highlight of the safety equipment list on offer in the Tesla Model Y, which also gets a host of other advanced driving assistance features like lane assist, obstacle-aware acceleration, speed assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and cabin camera with driver attentiveness monitoring. Other safety features offered in the Model Y as standard are front, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control, 360-degree parking camera, ABS with EBD, traction control and front and rear parking sensors. 

The Tesla Model Y retains the coupe-fastback essence of the Model X, but in a relatively smaller size, which along with the tech-laden cabin and performance makes it one of the most cutting-edge midsize electric crossovers of the current times.
